A Holistic Productivity App.
A Holistic Productivity App.
Project name: Grow.
Industry: SaaS / Productivity.
Project duration: 6 months.
My role: Lead Product & Visual Designer.
Conducted foundational research with the stakeholder to gather a deep understanding of the topic of personal productivity. This included conducting research on various topics, goals, and preparing frequent presentations to the stakeholder.
Built several wireframes for early concept testings.
Conducted several rounds of moderated and casual user testing to validate different versions of app concepts and designs. Iteratively iterated designs after each round of user testing until the app received major positive remarks from different users.
Proactively contributed to major features and backbone of the app through consistent design sprints with the team.
Managed the project, ensuring that it stayed on track and met the stakeholder's requirements.
Art directed the logo design and sophisticated onboarding animation storyboard.
For half a year, I had the wonderful opportunity to work with my mentor, who was also the stakeholder of the Grow project. Grow is a social-based productivity app that helps users achieve their goals and grow as individuals while feeling connected with the like-minded community. We started with a vague brief and limited information, but we managed to turn it into a real working concept that excited the community. I am so grateful for the opportunity and the invaluable feedback I received from my mentor along the way.
Throughout the project, I learned valuable lessons that will help me grow as a better product designer:
Experimenting and validating ideas with users is the most crucial process for designing solutions that address real problems and meet user needs. This also helps us to optimize the product performance by measuring the user behavior, satisfaction, and engagement.
Users needs aren't the only focal point of a product. Understanding the business goals and the market is important for aligning our design with the strategic vision and to create value for both the users and the business. It also helps us to identify the unique value proposition and the target audience of our product, and to define the key performance indicators and the success metrics to measure the impact of our design on the business outcomes.
Settle on a design framework for the project for efficiency and collaboration. I noticed that the project could have been more focused on creating the best user experience if there had been a clear design framework and process in place. This would have helped to ensure that everyone was on the same page and that the project stayed on track.
Design system libraries will save a great deal of time and effort. I realized that I spent close to 25% of my time on building up components from scratch and making sure that they matched the visual look and feel across different screens. This took away the time from focusing on the UX and more on the pixels.
I am passionate about learning and growing as a designer, and I believe that the Grow project has helped me to develop valuable skills and insights that will enable me to make a positive impact in society.
